Eric Chappell has many credits
to his name but is probably remembered best for his TV sit-com
series
"Rising Damp", broadcast between 1974 and 1978, and "Only
When I Laugh" between 1979 and 1982.
The play "Haywire" is based in the living accommodation built
above the shop of Alec Firth and his wife Maggie. Alec is a bookseller
and is having an affair with his assistant Liz. Having craftily
organised, or at least thinks he has organised, his domestic life
so that he and Liz can go to Spain for a holiday without his wife
knowing. What could possibly go wrong? With the entry of Phoebe
(Alec's mother), Jamie and Mandy (Alec's two children) we are soon
witnessing a procession of dilemmas all with the potential of stopping
the holiday and informing Maggie of his deception.
